I write to you all with Franny's warm little body on top of me at home. Lindsay and I picked her up today and even with stitches like Frankenstein and shaved fur, she is so happy to be here. I took her out in our yard and some of the neighbors came over to say hello, but Franny was not her usual social self. I think psychologically and physically she has a long way to go, but she seems up to the challenge. Her body is gruesome to see, but her face is as beautiful as it has always been.
We had enough money to pay the thousands of dollars to the vet today, thanks to this international effort. She spent four nights there and had so many tests in addition to the major surgery, and she'll have to keep going back for follow ups and stitch removal, but we had the money now, at least, to get her home safely and blissfully. I'm not sure how little Franny was able to inspire such humanity in so many wonderful souls, but I think somehow she knows that she is not alone. After watching the fundraising thermometer heat up, it seems that Franny is as healing to us all as we are to her.

Progress for Franny
This afternoon Franny was discharged from the emergency clinic in Glendale and we drove her to a Gateway Animal Hospital down the road, where she will continue to recover. Franny is able to walk and eat small amounts of food now, and wouldn't stop kissing our mouths when we saw her earlier. There were some pitbulls in the waiting room, but we seemed more nervous about them than she did.
A wonderful person named Astri wrote this article to keep mobilizing people to make donations for Franny's medical bills: http://www.shareable.net/blog/fight-for-franny-a-small-dog-with-a-big-story. In an already emotional time, it brought us to tears. Thank you for all the work you've done, Astri and everyone else.
Franny's life is bound to be extraordinary after such an outpouring. She is fighting, she will keep fighting, and she will always be loved. Thanks to your help paying for these vet bills, she has a chance to be loved.
With all my gratitude,
Ellen

Franny Continues to be a Champ
I just got off the phone with the vet, who said Franny is consistently able to keep down very small amounts of food, which is excellent news after intestinal surgery. She is still in danger of having her intestinal incisions reopen, so until Day 5 she is still in critical condition with a guarded prognosis. However, she is looking forward to visiting hours today.
We have also, with all of your support, raised over $2,000. I woke up this morning with such faith in people. Family, friends, and strangers have offered so many different kinds of support, and that is one of the beautiful things in the world.
The fact that Franny was abandoned and rescued probably contributes to her ability to fight for her life. After the initial attack, Franny ran away to die alone, as dogs do, with all of her little guts hanging out of her. But too many people wanted her to fight to keep living, and so she decided she'd better do just that. She is fighting still, but all the money you've given gives her a chance to stay alive.
Go give your doggies an extra kiss from us and Franny.
With gratitude,
Ellen

The Pitbull
For those of you who have asked, yes, we immediately filed a report against the pitbull. At first the owners said it would take a few days and that it would wear a muzzle, but in a courtyard where there are lots of little children and dogs, we told them and Animal Control that that wasn't good enough. The dog is now gone, although I haven't heard whether it was put down. I know Animal Control is sending an investigator for the case.
People with pitbulls, please keep them muzzled and train them well.
With gratitude,
Ellen

Franny Update
We are overwhelmed by all your support! We've already made $1,507 and the blog has only existed for 7 hours. To say we are humbled by your generosity in an understatement.
Lindsay and I just got back from seeing Franny at the hospital, and she wagged her tail and gave us lots of kisses. She was able to walk around a little and even took some food from our hands and kept it down. There is even a chance that she could come home tomorrow, although there is still a very long road to recovery.
Please keep up your prayers and keep spreading the word. We are relying on the kindness of friends and strangers to help pay for Franny to keep fighting. She loves you all.
With all our gratitude,
Ellen, Lindsay, and Franny

Fight for Franny
Hello Everyone!
I am writing on the behalf of my best friend, Lindsay Sproul, with a request. Here's what happened: her 11 month-old puppy, Franny, was rescued as a baby from a trash can, and has lived with us since Lindsay adopted her. Franny is the first dog I have ever loved, and has completely changed our lives. Friday morning, when Franny was peeing, a neighbor's pitbull tore out of their house and attacked her. Franny was on in a leash in her own yard at the time. The pitbull ripped open her stomach and she lost so much blood that her gums were white. Lindsay had to hold in Franny's insides while someone drove her to the hospital, and by the time she got there the vet had to perform emergency surgery on her just to try and save her. She lost 8 inches of her colon and is still in critical condition.
Lindsay is living off of student loans as she finishes her MFA, and can't afford the medical bills. Her family is all in Massachusetts and can't help very much her right now. The pitbull owners don't have any money themselves, so Lindsay has cleaned out her savings trying to save Franny. She is not only traumatized by what she saw Friday morning, but so worried about Franny's life, as am I. If you can spread the word to ask people to donate anything to help save Franny and pay for some hospital bills, it would help Lindsay so much. I've written grants to about 10 places for any money, and even wrote to Ellen DeGeneres.
Lindsay and I are devastated. If you can send even a dollar to Lindsay, it would help Franny keep fighting.
Franny is magical. If there is any way you know how to help us keep the magic going, we would be so happy.
With all my gratitude,
Ellen O'Connell
